China’s Vanishing Muslims: Undercover In The Most Dystopian Place In The World

China’s Uighur minority live a dystopian nightmare of constant surveillance and brutal policing. At least one million of them are believed to be living in what the U.N. described as a “massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy,” while many Uighur children are taken to state-run orphanages where they're indoctrinated into Chinese customs. The Uighurs' plight has largely been kept hidden from the world, thanks to China’s aggressive attempts to suppress the story at all costs. VICE News’ Isobel Yeung posed as a tourist to gain unprecedented access to China’s western Xinjiang region, which has been nearly unreachable by journalists. She and our crew experienced China’s Orwellian surveillance and harassment first-hand during their time in Xinjiang, and captured chilling hidden-camera footage of eight Uighur men detained by police in the middle of the night. We spoke with members of the Uighur community about their experience in these camps, and about China’s attempts to silence their history and lifestyle under the cover of darkness. Japan Is Sitting On A Massive Geothermal Reserve

"Somewhere in Japan, a Japanese person is always in an onsen," onsen owner Shunji Shibatani told VICE News correspondent Isobel Yeung, referring to the country's traditional hot spring spas. "Onsen is an inseparable part of Japanese culture." Hot spring spas are cultural institutions that have been around for more than a thousand years. Today, there are more than 3,000 onsens across the country, which service 120 million people every year, or roughly the entire population of Japan. The owners are facing pressure to share the geothermal reserves that heat their spas to help power the country. After the Fukushima meltdown, the Japanese government faced significant pressure to shut down all of the country's nuclear reactors. Without nuclear power, the country gets almost 87% of its energy needs from expensive and polluting fossil fuels. "We have enough to power 20 big nuclear power plants," said professor Sachio Ehara, chairman of the Geothermal Information Institute. "Japan is a land full of volcanoes." With nearly 200 volcanoes, Japan has one of the largest geothermal reserves in the world. If this naturally occurring heat were to be harnessed and converted into power, it could generate 10% of Japan's energy needs right away. "Geothermal energy and onsens will never co-exist because geothermals would take these resources, " said Masao Oyama, chairman of the Japan Spa Association, a powerful collective of spa owners who lobby for the $26 billion industry. "This energy source will be gone in 30 or 50 years." The world is addicted to meat: in developing countries around the world, diets are starting to look more like ours, incorporating more and more beef and pork. Massive factory farms are springing up to supply that demand. But industrial meat operations produce more than just cheap T-bones: they also dish out enormous environmental harm. Isobel Yeung traveled to the feedlots, farms and slaughterhouses where our meat is made, to see the true costs of our burger habit. This is her debrief. Why China Is Obsessed With Promoting Potatoes (HBO)

11.02.2017

China has a real problem: It has to feed 20 percent of the world’s population with just 10 percent of the world’s arable land. And the government recently announced farming practices are too intensive to be sustainable, all while demand for food grows more quickly than supply. Last year, China decided on a bold solution: to transform the potato into one of its staple foods. “Potatoes, they are easy to grow. They grow in bad soils. The water requirements are low. You don’t need irrigation necessarily, so it’s cheap,” Minzu University of China ethnoecologist Karlis Rokpelnis said in Beijing. “It creates a kind of farming where you don’t have to be on the land as much.” In a country famous for its rice consumption, however, convincing people to love the spud requires some persuasion — a task that a loyal Communist party member known as “Sister Potato” has taken upon herself. Shanghai’s property market is super hot, with surging demand for new apartments and prices in September hitting an all-time high, as the new middle class becomes the urban elite. Those who can afford to are even snapping up their second or third property as status symbols. People born into Mao’s China in the 1950s and ’60s are now enjoying an economic emancipation since the country opened itself up to foreign investment in the ’90s, creating a new consumer class. But income disparity in China is increasing and over the next decade, a projected 400 million will move to China’s cities. The Chinese government, fearing a widening inequality gap between the cities and the countryside, is struggling to control the bubble. Florida ranks 44th in the country for access to mental health care. And one of the quickest and easiest ways to get it is by invoking a 1971 law called the Baker Act. It allows for anyone threatening to harm themselves or others to be involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility for 72 hours. Committed, a VICE News Tonight special report, delves into the experiences of three families in crisis, each struggling with a child's mental illness, whose lives intersect for 72 hours at Gracepoint Wellness, one of the largest and oldest children's crisis facilities in Florida. Isobel Yeung speaks with counselors, families, law enforcement, and school officials to investigate how the Baker Act's patchwork system of short-term commitments is increasingly becoming a stand-in for a more comprehensive and long-term mental health care system.
